| Description: |
| The Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router combines the functionalities of three devices into a single device, a wireless access point, a four-port full-duplex 10/100 Mbps switch and a router. The wireless access point lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network while the switch connects your wired-Ethernet devices together. The router function ties it all together by letting your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The push button setup feature makes it easy to configure your wireless devices. The router serves as a DHCP server, includes an SPI firewall to protect against Internet intruders and also supports VPN pass-through. The WRT54GL even features TKIP and AES to protect your data and privacy with up to 128-bit encryption. With the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers and multi-player games with flexibility, speed, security and simplicity. Not easy but great range, March 9, 2007

Installation was not easy due to inexperience. had to try installation 4 times. once installed properly the router performed beyond expectations. I get an excellent connection 75 feet away, through floors and walls.

Linksys-Cisco WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router (Compatible with Linux), March 8, 2007
By user (TRF, MN USA)
Works like a charm, setup was easy. I did have a slight problem setting up the security settings, I think the instructions could have been a little clearer as I'm sure this is a common issue. Through a little trial and error this unit has done everything I have asked of it and more. With cement construction and a multiple level dwelling, I was initially worried that I wouldn't be able to push a signal throughout the whole house with just one unit, as I have some problems like this at work, but I couldn't have made a better selection.

Easy setup if one reads the manual first!, March 2, 2007
By user
Orignally I simply followed the instructions on the computer screen as the CD ran but then it got very confusing with the configuration button, etc. Then I read the manual and found out that I should use the manual setup option instead. After that, the setup was a breeze and I was up and running in no time (after I figured out that my old wi-fi adapter on my laptop does NOT work with the new WPA setting!)
Range is good and the speed is fast. Very pleased with the performance.

Very happy with my new router, March 2, 2007
By user (Colorado, United States)
First of all, I want to thank the people who took the time to write reviews about this product. Thanks to them I made the right choice.
This router replaced a very old wireless router, which was functional but gave me some problems (link reliability, performance problems, etc.) The old router was also lacking in security features.
The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router addressed my problems and my concerns. It has lots of nice security features. I downloaded the manual before getting the product, so setting up the router was a breeze. I like the web interface, which is far nicer than my old router's web interface. I like that I don't have to broadcast my SSID.
Both performance and link reliability has been great even though the router is not located in an optimal place in my house for wireless connections. The router is on the main floor. One of my PC's is on the second floor on the far side of the house with rooms in between. This was my least reliable connection before. Now it works great, though the PCI card I have in that machine is still 802.11b.
I work from home a lot and I need a router that works with my company's VPN. I didn't even have to make any changes to my old VPN configuration and I was able to get on-line just fine with all of my machines.
The Linksys came with its own default IP address for the LAN. I simply changed it to the IP address range I used with my old router and I didn't have to modify the static IP addresses I was using on any of my systems.
I have PC's (new and old), Mac's, and Sun workstations connected either wirelessly or with cables. They all access the Internet just fine.
What more can one ask for? Oh, and I love all the blinking lights on the front.. ;-)

Excellent product, I haven't had a single problem with it., February 28, 2007

It's everything I hoped it would be when I bought it. I had a bad experience with a Linksys router years ago but this one has been absolutely perfect.

Linksys WRT54GL wireless router, February 22, 2007
By user (Central Valley, California)
I bought this system to replace a Dell wireless router (TrueMobile 1200, I think) I got for free with a Dell laptop a couple years ago. My Dell router and laptop didn't work together well: I frequently had to stop and restart my laptop's wireless connection to get it to work.
With the Linksys router, I've now gone months without having to do anything to keep my connection up. It simply always works. Performance is great, and the menus within the router are as good as any I've seen (fairly intuitively organized at least).

Awesome product!, February 22, 2007
By user (New York, USA)
Got this router because it ran linux. I got DD-WRT, a third party firmware and got it hooked up using WDS. I'm very satisfied because I have more wireless coverage in my house and I didn't have to spend $100 on a wireless adapter. Plus it's faster wired and have 3 more ports for products I need to hook up in the future; maybe a PS3 perhaps? Couldn't complain!

Wow..... Great Wireless-G Router For Bittorrent, February 15, 2007
By user
This Linksys that I got less than a week rocks! In comparing with my old Netgear Wireless-G router-- this Linksys is a speedy bullet; while, the Netgear was a snail. It did wonder for my BitTorrent P2P software. Both download speed and more seeds.
With my Netgear router it would hang or crash, especailly during Summer time due to the heat. The Netgear would be slow of handling my BitTorrent data too with so little seeds (this might be because the ports are blocked).
FYI: I only did the Linksys firmware update and have not try the freeware opensource version. I might try it later on but I am so happy now that there is no point to try it.

Best wireless I've had so far, February 12, 2007
By user (New Jersey, USA)
I bought one of these after my D-Link DI-624 started to break down. I've always had issues with my d-link, and I wanted change. I did some research and decided to get the Linksys WRT54GL. I loaded in DD-WRT onto it and it's been working flawless ever since. After about two days of tweaking, i had my whole house covered with a wireless signal, something by D-Link was never able to do. The added customizablility with DD-WRT really made the difference. I've had zero problems with my wireless at home, even when using heavy traffic programs such as Bit Torrent, which would always make my D-link crash and reboot.
I highly reccomed this product, it has served me extremely well.

Big improvement over the WRT54G, February 12, 2007
By user (Washington State USA)
After struggling for months with the WRT54G, we upgraded to the WRT54GL (Linux). The Linux version had been recommended on the Windows Secrets ezine, because the operating system was much more stable. I'm much happier with it. Even when it drops out, it comes back quickly on its own. No more powering the router down and back up again.

Works great with different firmware, February 10, 2007
By user (CA United States)
This router is great right out of the box for regular users; however it'll suck for BitTorrent users. BitTorrent connects to high number of computers to transfer file(s) and the router keeps track of the computer that it established connection with. But it keeps that record wayyyy too long and there's no option to control that. So if you use BitTorrent you're gonna see that this router will hang on you, and you have to reboot it like 5 times a day to make it work again. Linksys doesn't offer any firmware update for this model yet, but have no fear since there are many other firmware that's out there compatible with this model. DD-WRT is one of the more popular choice for alternative firmware for this model and it has option to limit how many connection record it will keep track of and how long, so it fixes your BitTorrent problem and it'll give you tons of other options for your router that you'll be so happy that you've flashed your router.

Bargain router, February 8, 2007

had to install updated driver to get the router to work. Once the updated driver was installed it was smooth sailing. so far it has great range and the throughput is excellent.

Good router, after some tweaking, February 7, 2007
By user (Worcester, MA USA)
I bought this router because my old Netgear model kept changing the IP of my new iMac whenever it woke up from Sleep mode. Replacing it with this unit thankfully solved that problem. I then discovered that a lot of Linksys routers have an issue with BitTorrent and other P2P apps. Luckily, this can be fixed by using an alternative firmware such as DD-WRT or HyperWRT Thibor. As others have said, make sure to enable wireless security (NOT WEP, as it's relatively easy to crack), disable SSID broadcasting, and setup MAC filtering to make sure that only the wireless devices you specify can access the router.

Trouble free setup, January 31, 2007
By user (Staten Island, NY)
I highly recommend this router.... It worked right out of the box and the setup was a breeze...
I now have my PC and my XBox connected wirelessly to the internet and stream music from my PC to the XBox... all wireless!
I would stay FAR AWAY from the WRT300N.... I had nothing but trouble with it and the tech support at linksys was unable to help. Besides the wireless-g if plenty for most houses.
