As Revolutionary as the Internet Itself, July 13, 2003
By user (Alameda, CA)
Wireless technology has allowed me to easily access the Internet at home, my office, and a local cafe. When I drive out of town and need to check e-mail, I can often find a free "hot spot" where I can get my mail. The Linksys product has proven easy to install and configure. I've used it for both cable modem and ADSL services. With ADSL, the unit automatically dials, so you don't need any "dialer" software on your PC. Should you get this model, or the faster "G" version? Although the "G" wireless standard is faster, the 11 Megabit speed offered by this "B" router is 5 to 10 times faster than a cable modem or ADSL Interent connection - a "G" router won't make your Internet connection faster. The higher speed will only help when transferring large files locally. As far as security, cable modem technology and the Internet itself are insecure networks. The best way to secure yourself is to ensure that you don't share any files on your home computers, except while briefly copying files. Secondly, firewall software such as ZoneAlarm can further block intrusions. Many home users, including myself, leave the encryption features turned off, so that others can easily share the Internet connection. Overall, this product ROCKS, and has made computing far more versatile and convenient for me.

Still Disappointed, July 10, 2003
By user
Normally I don't write reviews, but I'm so mad about this lockup issue and I don't want anyone else to go through it. Other posts here are right, this modem locks up at least 3 times per day for me. I have to run down to the basement unplug and plug back in. Absolutely frustrating and makes me wish I hadn't lost my old router by a power surge. What's more frustrating is there is nothing on the linksys support site and the firmware has not been updated since December of 02. Seven months and I'm the first one with this problem? I don't think so Linksys and I will be replacing you shortly.

Good product, after getting 1.45.3 firmware (V4 router), July 6, 2003
By user (Mountain View, CA)
All of the things that people have said in the other comments about the version 4 router are true. I bought a version 4 router that shipped with v1.44.2 firmware. I was having a lot of problems with it because streaming media would need to pause and buffer every couple of minutes (really annoying) and also ALL downloads would halt after about 1.6 MB. I was really upset. After I downloaded the version 1.45.3 firmware, things are much better. It was released July 1. You can get it at ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41/befw11s4v4-fw-1453.zip (for some reason clicking on the link in IE wouldn't work for me and I had to navigate to the parent directory and then drag & drop the file to a folder on my computer. Before figuring out that I needed to browse I called linksys help and asked them to email it to me. Twice they said I'd get it in 15-30 minutes, but it never arrived) Setting the thing up was very easy with my DSL from Verizon. You can configure it from an internet browser and there are lots of options. I'm giving it 5 stars because it works great now. If I was rating the old firmware, I'd only give it 1 star. One more thing, when I first set this up, all my connections would drop every couple of minutes. I then changed to cables that I knew were rated for 100Mbit and things worked better.

AVOID VERSION 4 of this router at this time, July 2, 2003
By user (St Louis, MO USA)
Okay, I've been hunting for a wireless router for a long time. This one looked wonderfully promising, but after 3 weeks of random lockups (after which you must unplug the power cord and reinsert it to get it to respond) in which the PC thinks the router is dead, I'm pulling my hair out.I've read on several Broadband discussion sites that this is a VERY COMMON problem with the BEFW11S4 router VERSION 4. Apparently, version 2 and 3 are fine, but 4 (which is what is currently sold in the US) has some flaws they still have not resolved. Most recent firmware you say? Alas! I have installed it and same thing still happens. Other folks suggested a new beta version of the firmware, but it still has lockup issues too. I would say if you can grab a version 2 or 3 of this router, by all means. But unless you like unplugging your router twice a day to get it unstuck, avoid it until they fix the firmware. As of July 1st, it is still unresolved. -Jim

Buyer Beware, June 30, 2003
By user
Over the years I have bought Linksys products and have recommended their products to co-workers. Based on my experience with this product I will think twice before I do that again.I have the v4 edition of this router - I would think after 4 revisions they would start to get it right. The DHCP server on the hardware was very flaky and would stop giving IP addresses. The broadband router portion of the router would stop serving up web pages. I resorted to resetting the thing to get it to work again - this didn't always work either. ...

Lots of problems but I found one solution, June 28, 2003
By user (Lexington, Ky United States)
This router works great for the pcs that are wired directly to it. However, I've had all sorts of problems with wireless connections; everytime I reboot my laptop it takes a few DAYS to get it to connect again! I can reinstall the firmware, reinstall the card (wpc11), format the laptop, it doesn't matter, it still refuses to work. The best I could get was "you have successfully connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found". However, once I stopped using dhcp on the laptop (assigned it an ip address and manually entered the gateway and dns numbers for the wpc11) it began working. It works this way but it's aggrivating and does not work when using the router as a dhcp server as it should.

It's lucky I haven't smashed it yet, June 26, 2003
By user
All I can say after setting this router up (and rebooting it way too frequently, resetting it to defaults, upgrading the firmware, walking away and hoping it fixes itself, etc...) is don't buy it. When it works, it's fine. But it doesn't work without freezing for a couple minutes out of every 10, and after freezing a few times, it just locks up permanently (leading to the above-mentioned attempts at remedy). Oh, and when I say it freezes, I mean everything freezes. I have it connected to a cable modem on the internet side and a wired desktop and a wireless notebook on the local side. When it freezes, I have no internet, period. Wired or wireless. Zilch. So spend your money elsewhere--on something more reliable and stable.

Very disappointed, June 25, 2003
By user (Northern WI USA)
I have had two different BEFW11S4s and both devices crashed within 6 minutes (diagnostic light would go on and stay on). All tech support could tell me was that the motherboard was bad and they would send me a new one. I have had very bad luck with Linksys access points. I run a very plain three computer network. Linksys could not explain why their devices would not work. I would recommend a different name brand.

Light volume only!, June 24, 2003
By user (Orlando, Florida United States)
This router should be used for low volume traffic only. I bought two of these, one for my home office and one for a client's office. The setup was easy and router, dhcp, firewall, wireless and ethernet were all fine on the weekend. Monday morning was a disaster! The traffic from 10 clients overwhelmed the device and dhcp was failing and throughput was in the [...]. I thought the device was faulty and swapped it for the one at home that was working fine for two client PCs. Same results. Now we use the office befw11s4 as a wireless access point only. Also, I've experienced certain ports being blocked that shouldn't have been according to the settings.

Real Bad Product and equally bad customer support, June 24, 2003
By user (Bangkok)
BEFW11S4- Version 4 is really a bad product. It does not even merit ONE star rating. Negative star rating will be much more appropriate. It fails to keep the connections on, fails in long downloads, hangs up while surfing internet. Customer service from Linksys leaves a lot to be desired. It seems that this product did get top awards for its earlier version. Those who have bought this item with Version 4 have really wasted their money and time. In my opinion this product should be pulled out of the market and Linksys should refund the purchase cost. Before buying this product please look at various problems faced by people by searching on the net. Frankly it was a complete waste of money and time.

blocked by wet roof, June 23, 2003
By user (Wake Forest, NC USA)
The unit works great. However, I ended up having to run a cable to my wife's computer because the wireless signal was completely bocked when the cedar shingle roof was wet by rain. The signal had to pass through the wet roof twice to get from her study to my study. Tried high gain directional antenna, did not help.

Three computers, 30 minutes, and it was working, June 23, 2003
By user (Saskatchewan, Canada)
After reading some reviews, I was little hesitant to go with this or any other wireless router. But after narrowing down my choices and finding this one on-sale and with a rebate I wasn't expecting, I decided to go for it.The model I purchased came with the wireless laptop card. It probably took a half-hour to hook it all up. The router was installed onto the primary computer (Windows XP home edition). A second computer was also hard-wired into the router (Windows XP Pro) -which worked without making any changes. A Compaq laptop was the wireless part of the installation. The status of the wireless connection can sometimes change from excellent to very good from the same location, but the transfer rate stays steady at 11mps. As long as the status remains at good or higher, you don't even notice you are operating wireless. If you are downloading large files, such as PDF docs and such, you will notice a performance decline over your wired computer, but for surfing the net and reading email, I have trouble noticing a difference when using the wireless laptop. Outdoor range (with the router inside) is strong enough to surf the net from anywhere in my yard. The signal is also strong from my basement. I haven't really experimented with router location or the position of the two antennas on top of the router, as I haven't had a signal strength problem.

Beware - unreliable!, June 22, 2003
By user (Hanover, NH)
Linksys has released a product that is buggy and unreliable - dozens of users report freezes and inconsistent internet access. To compound the problem, they refuse to acknowlege that the product is flawed, or to give any decent support to resolve these issues. Don't waste your cash!

Do Not Buy This Router, June 22, 2003
By user
Like others have said. it loses its connection every 30 minutes and needs to be restarted. I strongly recommend you not buy this router.

Buggy, Buggy, Buggy, Nothing but Problems, June 21, 2003
By user (Parkland, FL United States)
This router has been nothing but problems. In short, it hangs on streams and downloads. It also likes to assign IP addresses when you follow the directions to use a fixed IP address. Tech support is useless, suggests adjusting the "MTU" and setting a fixed IP address (see above). There are -dozens- of people with these problems. See the issues at DSLReports.com, search for BEFW11S4. Until this is fixed, BUY ANOTHER BRAND.

no go. I expect better from Linksys., June 19, 2003
By user
I've tried 3 of these routers, all hardwired AND wireless, and all have the same problem - download windows freeze after a few minutes. It's quite intermittent, which makes it even more annoying. Sometimes it's at 1% complete, sometimes 99%. On average, though, pretty much all downloads lock up. DO NOT BUY. I have Windows XP Professional on a Dell Dimension 4300, and I couldn't get this thing to keep an internet connection, it dropped Yahoo all the time, and downloads froze up. AVOID! i can't say it enough. Linksys, it's a shame you've destroyed your good name. My old Linksys wired router works fine. This product is a useless piece of plastic. I feel horrible saying that, but it's true.

Novice found it easy, June 18, 2003
By user (Pleasanton, CA United States)
I have had a laptop as the sole computer in the house for 4 or 5 years. The kids (3 of them) use it too and the cable modem connection is under the bench at the kitchen table. I'd been looking into wireless networks for a couple of years but never got around to putting one in; they seemed too expensive, too many technical issues to deal with, etc. Finally, it got to be important that the PC move around for homework reasons or just to find a quiet place to surf and I bought the Linksys BEFW11S4 EtherFast Wireless-B Access Point + Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch, and their wireless laptop PC card also. I was expecting some difficulty either installing the router or configuring it with my PC. I am still running Win 98, I use a proxy server (Proximitron) to kill popups and other ads and it seems that every time I add software or hardware I end up having to play around with numerous settings to make everything work again. Another concern I had was fitting the new router into the tight space I use as the preferred spot to house modems, etc so they are accessible yet out of the way. I've had the cable modem in the cabinet part of a bench at the kitchen table. When I use the laptop, I open the bench, take out the power and Ethernet cables and plug in. I wanted to add the Linksys router to the storage area. Would it fit and still work? Installing this turned out to be as easy as taking it out of the box, figuring out were to plug in the power and following the 3 step user docs. I was a little confused by the initial description of how to plug into the router instead of directly into the cable modem but just blindly followed along. Right away, the router was on and working and I still could access the Internet. Configuring it was easy through a provided wizard. Again, just follow their recipe and it goes very smoothly. Next, I took out my existing Ethernet PC card, swapped in the new wireless card, and did 5 seconds of following the configuration procedures, and that was it. Done, and it worked right away. I immediately started moving the computer around the house to test it. Everything continues to work beautifully. As I get further away, I can see the meter showing the performance is degraded, but I am still getting very reasonable Internet response. I had a dropped session today but I had those occasionally prior to the wireless access. All in all, I am happy with this purchase. It works how I hoped and it was very easy to install. And everything fits in the bench.

Dreamy, June 18, 2003

Set it up and connected a wireless USB connector to my TIVO in under 10 minutes. Worked like a dream with little to no adieu. Dreamy.

Good router though Released too soon.., June 15, 2003
By user (NH United States)
This router works great as long as you dont need to download files larger than say... er.. 300k. Most all large file downloads stall. Once it stalls the progam I'm using to download the file freezes also so I need to shut that down. If Im lucky I'll sometimes I'll be able to get a 3mb file downloaded. I've contacted Linksys and they told me to try different MTU settings. Each time I tried a different setting it seemed to fix the problem for a little while but it was only an illusion. Hopefully Linksys releases a new Firmware version to fix this problem. Hey for [the money]it's still not a bad deal for a wireless router even though it does not work quite right. I say wait a month and see if they release a fix for this problem. If you need a router ASAP then pick another one. I have a Netgear MR314 that works wonderfully.

Great for wireless but don't compare it to wired, June 14, 2003
By user (Arnold, Maryland United States)
I've had my router/access point for more than 6 months and it's great for my environment - home network for disk/printer/cable modem sharing. I have 3 computers connected, 2 desktops and one laptop. I use a direct connect (desktop), USB network adapter (desktop), and PC card (laptop). All installations were very easy, with very good instructions for both XP (desktops) and ME (laptop). My access point is on the second floor and two of my computers are in my basement; physical distance is about 45 feet. Occasionally I have a dropout with the USB adapter, but it's quickly reconnected with either moving the adapter or, sometimes, a reboot. I've also implemented WEP (encryption) with only one problem: the USB adapter requires the key to be entered manually. Also, it only supports a 64-bit key but doesn't say so. Finally, someone else in my neighborhood has a network but there's no interference with mine. As for wired networks, that physical connection is certainly more stable but I get 11Mbps via wireless vs. 2-3 Mbps via wired. For novices, this is because the Ethernet PC card is limited to this speed even though the cabling supports 10Mbps.
