    Worked for 2 months, May 13, 2006
By user (US)
Afetr 2 months start disconnecting every day at least once. To erboot one has to pull the power plug out and wait for at least 60 seconds. After that it works for a couple of hours before it disconnects again. It's disconnects are not from overheating I keep it in the open space with plenty of ventilation. So this router is complete garbage.

Can't believe it is from DLink!, May 10, 2006
By user (Bloomington, IN USA)
I can hardly believe this product is from DLink. Use to trust D-Link products religiously, but this particular product has changed everything. Before my purchase, I didn't believe those negative comments and thought they were either rumors or users' own stupidity caused the problems... well, now I am among them! The router keeps screwing up, and here are just a few examples:

1. MSN messenger keeps disconnecting for no reason at all. The "solution" from DLink engineers is written for an obsolete version of the MSN messenger.

2. There is is no power switch. The only way to recycle power is to pull the plug, literally. However, 4 out 5 times when you recycle power in this fashion, the router will go into a locked-up state, where all the LEDs are lit (even for the ports without cables) but does nothing (no DHCP, no nothing). You have to keep recycling until you see the LEDs blinking

3. If you leave the sucker running for too long, it will hang during download. I was building some gentoo packages using "emerge" on one desktop computer, while surfing the net using a laptop via wireless... the emerge would get stuck in the middle of the download and I have to keep killing it and restarting emerge...

Who knows what other problems there may be... I kept urging the dlink engineers to release a new firmware, but for heaven's sake, they won't listen and till this very day, Rev D only has its factory firmware available.

    Excellent Router, May 6, 2006
By user (Antigua, West Indes)
After purchasing the Netgear wireless router which died after six months of use in August 2005, I purchased the D-Link 524 router which has worked efficiently since.

The only problem I have encountered was with the LAN connection in that I kept receiving the error 'Network cable disconnected'. My wireless connection on the other hand has been perfect from inception.

I recently went to the D-Link website and downloaded the latest firmware and I have not seen the LAN error again.

This is a great product.

    I'm throwing away my DI-524, May 4, 2006
By user (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
After 3 days working, it crashed and I don't get sucess to make the crash recovery procedure, informed by d-link support.

I only get the firmware upgrade crash recovery web page, when I type 192.168.0.1 in IE browser.

Low quality product, don't by it!!!

Great....until it breaks....then good luck getting support, May 3, 2006
By user (Gainesville, VA)
I had this router for a little over a month. It worked great for a few weeks until it started freezing repeatedly. I went to D-Link support, but it was embrassingly poor. Trying to communicate to a support person who barely speaks or understands English is no fun! Add to that, a bunch of hoops you have to jump through just to return a defective product.

I went through several support calls, authorizations, etc then was required to send back the router on my own dime. To top it all off, D-Link then sends me a refubished router back in place of my one month old unit I sent them.

In my opinion, they are just not worth dealing with. Buy something else. They obviously do not stand behind their products.

    Great product.....started believing D-link products, April 29, 2006
By user (U.S.A)
Its been approx 2 weeks I have been using this product and its working great as of now. Did not disconnect even once automatically :) which i thought after reading the reviews. Initial install is little trouble some but succeded just following step by step using the CD they have provided.
Thanks a lot

Works for a while and then problems start... not worth it., April 26, 2006
By user (Parsippany NJ USA)
First week it worked without any problems. Then it started disconnecting every 30 minutes or so.. and after three weeks it stopped connecting. I read numerous complaints about firmware problems. But it doesn't even allow me to access setup page.

Called customer support and spent more than 2 hours, with no result. Will try to return the product or throw it away.

Now I am searching for a router that will work.. you also do the same.

    Avoid, April 23, 2006
By user (Bellevue, WA United States)
The DI-524's setup is just plain lousy.

The interface simply hasn't been tested! If you go through the "Wizard" you can set up a WEP key, but if you do it through the menu, you get a "Key1 can not be empty" error message no matter what you put in the key field(s).

Another part of the lousy interface immediately bites you if you try to set up a WEP key. Most wireless cards and routers have a way to set the WEP key from an ASCII string or Hex string or passphrase. Anyone with any sense will want to use a passphrase, so that's the one option the DI-524 does NOT offer. Very lame, very inconvenient, very poorly designed.

You must use old firmware to make this router work, April 14, 2006
By user (Kansas City, MO USA)
The newer versions of the firmware destroy performance and make this router virtually worthless. I found that out the hard way. I had to go back to factory settings, then install firmware 1.03 from January 2004 and I haven't had a problem since. It sounds crazy but there are well documented problems from the firmware upgrades with this router. I'd give it 5 stars for performance and 0 for tech support / product support for the unusable firmware upgrades.

Nothing but problems, April 11, 2006
By user (San Francisco, CA United States)
I bought this router to use with a Mac and a PC. First tried to set it up using the Mac as the hub but was a disaster--spent several hours on hold or dealing with their technical assistance, which was one of the poorest I've ever experienced. One of the three guys I dealt with was definitely in a foreign land and could not understand the questions I was asking him. Two of them were pretty snotty, as well. They finally said they couldn't help if I was using a Mac (even though their materials do mention it's compatible) and they suggested I run Windows operating system on my Mac. (OK, whatever, I need to be on Mac for my work as a designer.) So I got the system up and running using the PC as a hub, and it works fine when both computers are in the same room, but now when I move the laptop to any other room in the house I lose reception--it cuts in and out, and is basically unpredictable. I'd say avoid this brand based on their lousy customer service--the product itself might be same as other brand and obviously works like a charm for some people, but if you're having any trouble they're not going to be very helpful.

After buying this product and sending in the rebate, it started to experience two well known problems. Randomly rebooting and dropping connections.

Support wasted my time for three days with suggestions that either couldnt be done (upgrade/downgrade firmware - theres only one version...the one it ships with!), unplugging and plugging, blaming my ISP, blaming my laptop, at one point saying that there router would fail if any "worms on the internet" existed. No, I am not making that up. I have to clean the internet of worms for their product to work properly. Not to be dissuaded by the fact that i have two other routers that worked fine in the same setup, d-link refused to replace the product under warranty unless I repeated all of the troubleshooting steps I had already done.

When I told them I was throwing the product away and not buying anything from them again, they said that was fine.

An hour later I got an automated email from their customer support database saying that the problem had been closed and the customer satisfied.

Buy something else.

nice unit though small problem with sbc dsl, April 9, 2006
By user (San Francisco, CA United States)
this is a nice unit. i just bought it to have wireless at home via sbc dsl. but i could not get the connection after setting up pppoe. after browsing online, found this solution which may be useful for someone: log in to the modem. and change pppoe to bridge mode. after this, everything works pretty nicely. (prior to this, called dlink support. they did not know how to solve it.)

Difficult to set up for PPPoE, April 2, 2006
By user (Fla)
I have 2 Di-524's and two Linksys - one wireless. One Di 524 purchased in June 05, I was able to easily hook this up to my linksys router and it works great in the network as a wireless access to the Internet.

So I recently purchased another Di 524. This newer one is a DISASTER. By itself I cannot get it to hook up to my verizon DSL [PPPoE] and it will not intergrate into another network as the older Di524 did!

Sometimes it will connect ok and then disconnects. What a hassle. i don't know what Dlink did to the newer firmware, but it seems to make the newer versions of the di 524 LESS compatible and unreliable.

I will trash this newer di 524, never buy Dlink again, and go back to the very reliable Linksys.

    Crash with 2.4GHz Phone, March 29, 2006
By user
Every time I answer my 2.4GHz phone, the Internet connection out of my DI-524 drops for both the wireless AND the LAN! I have changed channels on both devices many times. I also have the latest Frimware.

The worst product ever!, March 25, 2006
By user
It seems like that the life cycle of this product is less than a month. I bought this router three weeks ago, and it died yesterday. It had worked poorly for three weeks; it often got locked, and I had to recycle power once for a while. Now, it keeps rebooting by itself. What a waste of moeny and time!

    A router you can't count on, March 24, 2006
By user
The first one I bought worked great for about 14 days, then it wouldn't stay connected for more than 5 minutes. Returned it...Now the second one is starting to act up. Not sure what is wrong with these things, but avoid this model if at all possible.

Works great - but loses signal frequently, March 23, 2006
By user
So, I decided to get a wireless router so I could hop into the world of wi-fi gaming with my Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. The router itself works just great. I haven't had any problems playing online and it was simple to set up following the directions the setup disc provided.

The PROBLEM however, is that it loses it's signal frequently, causing you to have to unplug the router and plug it back in to reconnect to the net. And this isn't just a once and a while thing, we're talking multiple times in a day on average. Very annoying. So, it's hard to recommend. If I were you, I'd do a little more research into wi-fi and routers before you spent your money on this one. I have had problems with DLink, but this one was recommended for compatibility with the DS and so forth, and so I bought it.

If you don't mind the frequent disconnects (like AT LEAST 2 or 3 times during an average day, in my experience) it does what it's supposed to do. And does it well.

Router restarts perodically, March 22, 2006
By user (New York)
For the past few months, router started perodically and it caused disconnection from internet and stopped some operation which is really bothering me.

WEP + VPN is a NO NO!!, March 20, 2006
By user (Boston MA)
I bought this new router and it SUCKS!!.Initially I started with setting up a WEP for my home office. And each time my VPN is left idle for sometime the Wi-Fi signal fades off.
I cannot even see a signal when I am sitting infront of the router.
On the other end in the same scenario a wired connections works fine. So if your work is wi-fi dependent, I would think twice before getting it.
Hope it helps.

    A good router, March 17, 2006
By user (Eagan, MN)
I purchased this router very recently (in the last week of feb 06) and I am happy to say that till now it works fine. The setup was easy and I followed the s/w provided by D-Link. I didn't expect the s/w to work (I had seen come complaints about it in some of the reviews) but it worked for me (I have a Dell Laptop with Win XP )
The setting up of security features was also easy. I can get consistent high speed connectivity with this router.
Right now the only problem I face is that the router signal drops from excellent to very good sporadically (the router is in my study and I sometimes take the laptop to the living room and the 2 are seperated by a wall). Hopefully this doesn't imply signs of trouble for me.
Also D-Link could improve on its mailing rebates trackinig. This part is pathetic.
